BBC NOW’s Composer Portrait Series in Cardiff: The season begins next week with the work of Simon Holt (BK)
The BBC National Orchestra of Wales begins a series of Composer Portrait concerts at their new home BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff Bay beginning with a focus on the work of the Orchestra’s Composer In Association, Simon Holt on Wednesday October 28 at 7pm.
The series of three Composer Portraits concerts will take place from October to December this year and each concert will introduce audiences to three internationally renowned living composer’s talents. It offers the chance to totally immerse oneself in their musical world and hear them talk about their inspiration and ideas. These events will be presented from stage and include interviews, discussions and an opportunity to meet the composer after the performance. Each concert will be recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Each composer featured in The Composer Portraits series has their own inspirations and style and these concerts will provide a fascinating insight into their work.
Simon Holt has been a major force in British music for the last twenty-five years. Highly charged and concentrated, his music draws on many different sources, ranging from Spain and the writings of Lorca through to mythological and anecdotal material (his last opera was based on a West Midlands news story of the 1940s).
The Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Thierry Fischer and International Violinist Chloë Hanslip will join Simon Holt and the Orchestra to perform a specially chosen selection of Simon’s work on October 28; witness to a snow miracle for violin and orchestra, Syrensong, Sharp end of night, and Minotaur Games. Conductor Thierry Fischer and Simon Holt both play major roles in BBC National Orchestra of Wales as Principal Conductor and Composer In Association and have an established working relationship with the Orchestra premiering one of Simon Holt’s pieces Troubled Light at the BBC Proms last year under Fischer.
The pieces for the concerts have been selected to show a full representation of each of the composers’ orchestral work and were chosen by each composer in collaboration with the Orchestra’s Senior Producer Tim Thorne. They are chosen to offer an insight in to the whole landscape of sound that composer inhabits, rather than just one specific element. Some of the pieces are for solo instruments and some are large orchestral pieces.
The spotlight concert on Simon Holt will be followed by a focus on the work of composers Christian Jost and Bruno Mantovani. Audiences in the intimacy of the Orchestra’s new hall will be able to enjoy getting inside knowledge of what goes on in a composer’s head when a new piece of music comes to life.
